A practical look at garage-door seals, vents, stored food and the difference between exclusion and active control.

A garage is often the least sealed part of a home and the easiest place to overlook fresh activity. The overhead door opens often, storage hides wall edges, and utility lines cross from outdoors to indoors. A useful inspection starts with these transitions rather than a random trap placed in the middle of the floor.

Walk the perimeter

With the door closed, look for daylight along the bottom and sides. Check accessible vents, wall penetrations, pipe openings and the connection between garage and living space. Do not block a required vent or alter electrical, gas or mechanical equipment. Take photos of gaps and signs so the proposed repair can be discussed precisely.

Make activity easier to spot

Use closed containers for pet food, seed and other attractive supplies. Keep boxes from piling tightly against every wall; leave a visible inspection path where practical. Note fresh droppings or gnawing and the dates you see them. A tidy garage helps, but it cannot compensate for an unsealed route.

Plan exclusion with current activity

If rodents may already be inside, discuss monitoring or control before closing their apparent entry. Ask which openings will be repaired, what materials will be used and whether garage-door hardware or ventilation needs another qualified trade. UC IPM emphasizes durable exclusion together with sanitation and, when needed, population control. Follow CDC precautions if cleanup is required.

Questions homeowners ask

Can I fill every gap with expanding foam?

Foam alone is not a durable rodent barrier because gnawing animals can damage it. The suitable repair depends on the opening and what it serves. Required vents, drainage and utility clearances must remain functional, so ask what material and trade are appropriate.

What if the garage is already occupied?

Record the signs and discuss current-activity control alongside exclusion. Sealing a route without understanding where animals are can leave them inside. A complete scope should explain how the activity will be monitored and when repairs can be considered effective.
